Brandeis University has its main focus on liberal arts. It’s a private research university situated in Waltham, Massachusetts.
It stood thirty fourth among national universities in U.S. News and World Report’s 2010 rankings.
Brandeis University was established on the site of Middlesex University in 1948. It is a nonsectarian establishment.
The Middlesex University was facing bankruptcy in 1946. Desperately looking for a way to save the university, C. Ruggles Smith approached Israel Goldstein – a prominent rabbi – and proposed to hand over Middlesex university’s campus and its charter to his committee.
The act was done in the hoe of saving and re-establishing the university. Israel Goldstein accepted the offer and thus Brandeis University came into being.
Brandeis University has five schools:
- Rabb School of Summer and Continuing Studies
- The College of Arts and Sciences
- The Heller School for Social Policy and Management
- The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences
- Brandeis International Business School
There are twenty departments in the college of Arts and Sciences. There are also twenty two interdepartmental programs.
Established in 1959, The Heller School for Social Policy and Management is famous for its programs in healthcare, social works, international development and social policy.
Brandeis University offers a bachelor`s, master`s degree and doctoral degrees. It also offers post baccalaureate certificates.
Brandeis University follows a semester-based curriculum calendar system.
The University offers sixty six majors out of which the most popular are Political Science, Psychology, Economics, Computer Science and Ethnic & Cultural Studies.
The rate of student retention is ninety three percent. The ratio of student to faculty is 8:1. The rate of graduation rate is eighty nine percent.
Campus:
Brandeis University is situated nine miles to the west of Boston.
There is an on-campus farmer’s market which is organized by the students.
This reflects the university’s keen interest in the environmental issues. The university has also implemented a single stream recycling program.
A course – Greening the campus and community – is also offered by Brandeis University that observes the environmental effects of the university and the city and then develops and implements projects that can reduce those impacts.
Brandeis Emergency Medical Corps provides emergency medical services by volunteer student organizations. They do not charge any fee.
On campus housing is available at Brandeis University. The dormitory can accommodate around three thousand students. Students can also seek part time employments on campus which helps them cover part of their academic expenses.
