The center for Measuring University performance (CMUP) at Arizona State University, evaluates the nine different measures of the research universities of the universities in America and them determines best among them.
These include:
  • Money devoted to the research
  • Academy members
  • Faculty awards
  • Doctorates granted
  • SAT/ACT
Each one these establishments is dedicated to the advancement of science, technology and medicine, and the pursuit of knowledge.
America’s Top Five Research Universities
1.  Columbia University
Columbia University is the best research institution in the United States of America. Every year, Columbia University spends around five hundred and twenty nine million dollars on research. The number of degrees granted is around six hundred doctorates. This school spends approximately seventy percent of its research budget on life sciences research which includes medicine, and eleven percent on environmental studies. Around twenty three percent of it’s students are from abroad.

2.  Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Massachusetts Institute of Technology stands second on the lust of America’s top research institutions. Every year, MIT spends around six hundred million dollars on research and awards six hundred doctorate degrees annually.
Thirty seven percent of the research budget goes to engineering sciences and twenty nine percent to life sciences. Getting admission to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is not easy since only 10 percent of first-year applicants are admitted to the institution.
It has the smallest enrollment of schools which is around 11,000 students.

3.  Stanford University
Stanford University ranks third on this list of top American research universities. The university spends around six hundred and eighty million dollars every year on research. The number of doctorate degrees granted each year is around 700.
Fifty seven percent of Stanford University’s research budget goes to life science and medicine and around twenty two percent of the budgets to engineering. An important thing that needs mentioning here is that both DSL and Google were invented here.

4.  Harvard University
Harvard University ranks fourth on this list. The school spends over four hundred and fifty million dollars on research annually. Harvard University’s faculty ranked #1 on national academy members list in 2007. Harvard University grants around seven hundred doctorate degrees every year. Its sat range is one of the highest in America.
If your score is les than 1400, you cannot get admission at this prestigious school. Harvard University spends around seventy percent of its research budget on medicine and life sciences.

University of Pennsylvania ranks fifth on the list of best American research institutions. It spends over six hundred and seventy six million dollars annually on research and awards four hundred and eighty three doctorate every year.
Eighty percent of its research budget goes to life sciences and medicine.
