DC's public system is split in two. District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS, NCES district 1100030) operates 117 schools with 50,839 students; public charter schools are governed separately by the DC Public Charter School Board and carry their own NCES district IDs -- District of Columbia International School, for instance, is district 1100097. Per the DC PCSB, 99,652 students were enrolled across District public and public charter schools in 2024-25, meaning roughly half of DC's public-school students are outside DCPS.

A closed-school caution: Booker T. Washington Public Charter School operated from 1999 to 2014 and its Wikipedia article retains an active-looking infobox. And "Washington High School" returns schools in Franklin County, Missouri and Somerset County, Maryland -- neither in DC.

District of Columbia school-level context

DC's public schools are overseen by the District of Columbia State Board of Education and the Office of the State Superintendent of Education, which publish school data separately from the federal NCES directory used above. DCPS enrollment peaked at roughly 150,000 students in the 1960s before declining over subsequent decades.
